Clone 20d5 recognizes the mouse NKG2A, NKG2C and NKG2E antigen on a subset of NK and NK-T cells in most mouse strains (e.g. AKR/J, BALB/c, C3H/He,C57BL/6, CBA/J, DBA/1, FVB/N, 129/Sv, NOD, SWR, and most DBA/2 substrains, but not DBA/2J). The C-type lectin-like NKG2 receptors form heterodimers of CD94 and one of several NKG2 family members, i.e., NKG2A (CD159a), NKG2C (CD159c), or NKG2E. CD94/NKG2 receptors monitor classical class I expression indirectly by means of the recognition of classical class I signal peptides. These signal peptides are processed to a nonamer peptide called Qdm that is presented to CD94/NKG2+ NK cells by a nonclassical MHC class I molecule called Qa-1. CD94/NKG2 receptors equip NK cells with the capacity to detect cells with abnormal MHC class I expression, such as often results from viral infection or transformation.
