The aromatic dialdehyde naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA) is essentially nonfluorescent until reacted with a primary amine in the presence of excess cyanide or a thiol, to yield a fluorescent isoindole with excitation/emission maxima ~419/493 nm.
