Ouabain is a member of a class of glycosylated steroids collectively known as cardiac glycosides due to their therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of congestive heart failure. Ouabain inhibits the ion transport activity of the plasma membrane Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase via binding to its catalytic α-subunit. This BODIPY FL ouabain derivative offers some valuable properties. Because the BODIPY FL fluorophore is nonpolar and relatively small, labeled ligands typically have superior receptor-binding properties over fluorescein- and NBD-labeled derivatives.
